Jordan Hudgens: And when we talk about social media as it relates specifically to job placement there are a lot of different ways that you can approach it. I'm going to give one example that I personally have experienced and then we're going to go into some of the other things that surround social media.
This was something that wasn't really a big deal 5 or 10 years ago. But it's become an incredibly important part of the job process and not just when you want to get a job but also keeping your job and not losing it over something that you may post on it.
The one example I'll give on my side, is when we were looking for a new instructor for Bottega we wanted to find somebody that would go and they'd create additional courses. We didn't even make a job posting, and we didn't go any of the traditional routes, and the way that we did it is I follow a number of people on social media.
And there was one individual specifically that really stood out to me because every time that he would post he'd always be about some project he was working on. He showed throughout all of his kinds of posts he was always trying to help others learn, and he was showing through his experience both his good experiences and his negative ones on how he could help others.
And so for me, I didn't even need to see his resume I didn't need to honestly I didn't. We interviewed him but I didn't even really need to because I had already seen the way he was in public for a year and all through social media and we ended up hiring him. For anyone that's gone through our react program, Max who is our instructor, that is how I found him.
So I didn't have to look through a one-page resume for him. I looked through a year's worth of Instagram posts and stories and seeing the way that he interacted with people and that gave me a much more clear insight there is no way that he could have faked being that type of person for a year.
It was a very genuine way of being able to hire someone, and I think that even though that's a nontraditional route it is still very important to be cognizant about the way that you're portraying yourself online with social media.
Stephanie Conley: Absolutely, and it's important to be consistent across all social media. Some of the social media sites that you should be active on are first of all linked in social media, and Facebook is used for recruiting, you have blog posts if you choose to do so, you have meetup.com which is not a dating Web site.
Jordan: That's good to know. Some people treat linked-in like that.
Stephanie: They do.
But those are some examples of social media that you should be using, and Instagram is another great example of it in there.
Jordan: As important as it is to be consistent with your postings, it's also very critical that you are smart about the kinds of things that you post. Because in our current world it seems like just as many people lose their jobs from social media postings as those who get them.
Stephanie: Yes absolutely. And fun fact most recruiters are not H.R. so we're not bound by the same rules. So it's fair game if I'm looking at you for a candidate I'm going to Google you, I am going to look at your linked-in, at your Facebook, and your Instagram. I'm going to look at everything I can to figure out if you are a quality candidate for my company.
Jordan: Absolutely. So in review, when it comes to pursuing a job from a social media perspective make sure that you find the outlets that work the best for you. So if you love to write and you love to write technical articles then posting your blog posts on LinkedIn and Twitter can be great.
If you want to show your technical expertise through video screencast. That was personally the way that I do it, then YouTube is a great option and you can post all the kinds of things that you're learning and the kinds of things you want to show to others right on there.
So with all the different social media outlets that are out there, there's really something for everyone there's something that everyone can use.
Stephanie: There really is and there are so many different ways to build credibility for yourself.
